![]() Compared to Karaoke Revolution's scrolling timeline the SingStar presentation is a crude hacked together system without much thought put into it. There's no line to indicate the current time and the feedback on what your current pitch is has a slight delay to it. These help with pitch, but the timing is completely up to you. The lyrics appear on screen in typical karaoke form along with the pitch and timing bars that look like glowing gummy worms. The gameplay itself is nearly identical to the Karaoke Revolution games and just as effective in its scoring of singing ability, but once again it's all about presentation and it's a little wobbly here. I couldn't stop thinking about how the band died in a plane crash as I stared at their unblinking faces. As happy as the song is the graphics feel like they're better suited for some video eulogy. "Sweet Home Alabama" simply shows pictures of Lynyrd Skynyrd slowly moving by. This is made worse when there isn't a video for the song. This makes it harder to try and re-imagine the song your own way. Instead we're forced to see the same video every time and think of the original singer and the way he jumps around a room. They hurt the ability to really get lost in the song. As for the videos, it's already punishment enough that "Friday I'm in Love" has been included as a Cure track, but do we really need to revisit the image of Robert Smith in puffy sneakers, oversized shirt, and a makeup style that resembles a clown who fell inside a bakery? The other problem with the video is a little less definite. These versions are crudely done and are often just cut off abruptly. The licensed tracks mess up the option to sing a shorter song. The vocal track can't be dropped out so you just hear just yourself singing. and now I am regretting it.Even if the tracks and videos are the originals they help to dampen the fun of the game. Depeche Mode, Erasure, Morrisey, etc.) And now, they've already released a SingStar Volume 2, which pretty much destroys the promise that this Singstar was going to be the only version you were ever going to need to buy. And licensing limitations means that Americans don't get a lot of great 80's songs that ARE available in other countries (i.e. 80% of the songs are random pop groups (many of them European) that I guaranty you've never even heard of. To date there are 230+ songs available online, but I challenge you to find more than 6 to 8 that you actually enjoy singing. ![]() The microphones produce very poor quality sound on even the most elaborate sound systems. The in-game songlist is varied but rather weak. The polished interface masks a rather barebones package. Sign more labels, get more songs, make more money. If you're going to win over Karaoke Revolution, Rock Band, etc., then win the content war. ![]() 1/3 to 1/2 of the 300 artists currently available I've never heard of in the US - I'm glad they included the European ones, but without the staples of Madonna, Foreigner, Phil Collins (to name a few) it could never be truly great. Two, the current online store selection is lacking. You can turn up the mic volume to overcome the song's vocals, but to turn them off entirely would be useful. ![]() One, the song your singing to isn't instrumental, meaning you will hear the vocals. The pitch bars are interesting but really show how off key one could be, and gives a visible measure of ability in battle mode - but it can also be turned off via practice mode.
